Kids and Vegetables Living in Harmony, It’s True

Fair to say our perspective on food changed dramatically when we had children. First, we came to understand that the dinner table is a battleground. It’s a war of attrition, and the first one to blink loses.

Second, and more seriously, we were poignantly reminded that the source of our food had a huge impact on the nutritional value for growing bodies, especially if said ‘growing body’ was only going to ingest three spoons full. Source matters.

We used to love ‘harvesting’ our vegetables from the overflowing tables at the Granville Island Market, origin sometimes local, sometimes not so much. Now growing our own produce, we take out the element of the unknown, and that’s reassuring.

But we’re also enjoying some other, important parts of the process: the planting, weeding, watering and general love we lavish on our raised beds has become a wonderful ritual with the kids. The vegetable garden has been another unexpected joy in our daily farm life. And, dammit, the veggies just taste better. And we know they’re better for us.

We’re happy to share the abundance of our garden with you. Depending on the season, you’ll find these veggies and herbs, all grown with love and without pesticides and chemical fertilizers:
